Our approach supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 to enhance, protect and rehabilitate the biodiversity and ecological value of ecosystems wherever we operate.
We acknowledge the pressures on these environments from land use change, climate change, pollution, resource use, introduced species, and their cumulative regional impacts. We're committed to managing impacts responsibly in line with regulatory requirements and leading practices.
We remain firmly committed to not exploring or mining within World Heritage Sites and respect all protected areas and their values.
Our Biodiversity Strategy supports informed decision-making and long-term sustainability across all lithium mining operations.
A dedicated Biodiversity Working Group leads implementation across environmental management, water, land access, approvals and sustainability.
We prioritise the avoidance and minimisation of environmental impacts. Where impacts are unavoidable, our focus shifts to restoration and rehabilitation, with offsets considered only for residual impacts where required by regulation.
Sensitive habitats are avoided where possible, and controls are implemented to minimise impacts where disturbance is required.
Rehabilitation and restoration are progressed throughout the mine life where practicable. Programs such as weed management and feral animal control reduce impacts from introduced species and support ecosystem resilience.
Where required, biodiversity offsets are used as a measure of last resort to address residual impacts in accordance with regulatory requirements. PLS has contributed to offset programs, including the Pilbara Environmental Offsets Fund and the Mata Escura Biological Reserve.
Approved Mine Closure Plans, outline strategies for decommissioning, rehabilitation and long-term monitoring with a focus on restoring landforms, supporting biodiversity and achieving stable post-mining landscapes.
Progressive rehabilitation is undertaken where possible, with ongoing monitoring of water, stability and ecological outcomes.
Our biodiversity performance is tracked through environmental monitoring, compliance and reporting aligned with regulatory requirements and industry frameworks.
